UNITED NATIONS ALERTS NEW YORKERS TO MILLENNIUM SUMMIT’S GOALS

Advertising Campaign Outlines Mission Of Largest-Ever Gathering of World Leaders

NEW YORK, 24 August -- The United Nations announced today a citywide advertising campaign to alert New Yorkers to the goals of the Millennium Summit from 6 to 8 September.

The largest-ever gathering of world leaders, with some 150 heads of State or government scheduled to participate, the Summit will tackle major global challenges such as how to pull over 1 billion people out of extreme poverty, reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS and protect the environment.

The mainly out-of-home advertising campaign was created by Brand Buzz, a division of Young & Rubicam Inc. The campaign is appearing around New York City in such places as bus shelters, telephone kiosks, in 40 per cent of subway cars and other related media. Radio public service announcements will remind New Yorkers that the world leaders have come to the city to make history.

The Summit’s goals also appear on the back of fold-out New York City subway maps that will be distributed in tourist information centres and city attractions, including the Central Park Zoo.

A video news release, narrated by Harry Belafonte, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Goodwill Ambassador, will be made available to broadcasters.

The creative design for the campaign and the advertising space were provided pro bono to the United Nations.

Brand Buzz, a division of Young & Rubicam Inc., is a unit comprised of cross- discipline specialists who develop large-scale, holistic communications programmes connecting to the consumer in a uniquely targeted fashion through an innovative blend of conventional and non-conventional pathways.
