SECURITY COUNCIL PRESS STATEMENT ON SIERRA LEONE

SECURITY COUNCIL PRESS STATEMENT ON SIERRA LEONE

The following Security Council press statement on Sierra Leone was delivered today by Council President Jean-Maurice Ripert ( France):

Security Council members received a briefing from Under-Secretary-General Jean-Marie Gu觥nno on the presidential elections in Sierra Leone.  Security Council members noted the results of those elections.

Security Council members congratulated the people and institutions of Sierra Leone -- particularly the National Electoral Commission and the Sierra Leone Police -- on their conduct over the election period and the commitment that they demonstrated to the democratic process.  Security Council members also commended the United Nations system for its invaluable support to this process.

Security Council members encouraged the international community to continue to support Sierra Leone on its path to peace and security, including through achieving agreement between the new Government and the Peacebuilding Commission on an integrated peacebuilding strategy.
