In Country, Council Expresses Deep Concern over Incidents on 28-29 April
The Security Council decided this morning to extend the mandate of the United Nations Office in Timor-Leste (UNOTIL) until 20 June 2006, by unanimously adopting resolution 1677 (2006).
Expressing its deep concern over the incidents of 28-29 April in Timor-Leste and the ensuing situation, the Council requested the Secretary-General to provide, by 6 June, an update on the situation and on the role of the United Nations following the expiration of UNOTIL’s mandate.
Fully committed to the promotion of long-lasting stability in the country, the Council encouraged the Government of Timor-Leste and other State institutions to address, with UNOTIL’s assistance, the causes of the violence in order to prevent a recurrence.
The meeting began at 11:15 a.m. and ended at 11:20 a.m.
Council Resolution
The full text of resolution 1677 (2006) reads, as follows:
“The Security Council,
Recalling its relevant resolutions on the situation in Timor-Leste, in particular its resolution 1599 (2005) of 28 April 2005,
“Expressing its deep concern over the 28/29 April incidents, as well as the ensuing situation, and acknowledging the actions of the Government of Timor-Leste to establish an investigation into the incidents, their effects and causes,
“Remaining fully committed to the promotion of long-lasting stability in Timor-Leste,
“1. Decides to extend the mandate of the United Nations Office in Timor-Leste (UNOTIL) until 20 June 2006;
“2. Requests the Secretary-General to provide the Council by 6 June 2006 with an update on the situation in Timor-Leste and the role of the United Nations in Timor-Leste following the expiration of the mandate of UNOTIL with a view to taking further action on the subject;
“3. Encourages the Government and other State institutions of Timor-Leste, with the assistance from UNOTIL within its current mandate, to address the causes of the violence in order to prevent a recurrence of such incidents;
“4. Decides to remain actively seized of the matter.”
