SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES PEACE PACT IN SENEGAL

Secretary-General welcomes peace pact in senegal

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan on 31 December 2004:

The Secretary-General welcomes the peace pact signed yesterday between the Senegalese Government and the Leader of the Movement of the Democratic Forces of the Casemance (MFDC).  The Secretary-General hopes that this accord will put an end to two decades of hardship and strife and bring about a new era of reconciliation and reconstruction in this southern region of Senegal.

The United Nations stands ready to assist Senegal in this endeavour.
