SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES INITIATIVE BY PRESIDENT CARTER TO CONVENE AFRICAN CONFERENCE FOR PEACE IN RWANDA AND BURUNDI

The following statement was received today from the Spokeswoman for the Secretary-General in Europe:

WARSAW, 10 November -- Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali welcomes the initiative taken by President Carter to convene an African Conference for Peace in Rwanda and Burundi.

The Secretary-General hopes that the Conference will lead to lasting peace in Rwanda and Burundi and to the speedy return of refugees on a voluntary basis.

The Secretary-General has indicated that the United Nations would be ready to send observers to this Conference. He will consult the Organization of African Unity on this new initiative.
