SECRETARY-GENERAL TO VISIT CANADA, 1-3 DECEMBER

On Monday, 1 December, the Secretary-General will begin his first State visit to Canada, including events in Ottawa and Toronto.

In Ottawa, he will meet with the Governor General of Canada, Romeo LeBlanc, with the Prime Minister of Canada, Jean Chretien and with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lloyd Axworthy. Other senior officials in the Canadian Government with whom the Secretary-General is expected to meet include the Minister for International Cooperation. The Secretary-General will make an important address at the opening ceremony of the Landmines Conference Secretariat on Wednesday, 3 December.

In Toronto, the Secretary-General will deliver a speech on the subject of good governance at a gala dinner organized by the United Nations Association of Canada.

The Secretary-General will return to New York on the evening of Wednesday, 3 December.
