SECRETARY-GENERAL REAFFIRMS UN DETERMINATION TO RESTORE PEACE

IN EASTERN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan”

The Secretary-General reaffirms the determination of the United Nations to work closely with the Congolese authorities in restoring peace in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, through political engagement and military pressure on all those obstructing the peace process.

The Secretary-General was deeply saddened to learn of the death of an Indian peacekeeper and the injury of four others serving with the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and extends his deepest sympathy and condolences to the Government of India and to the families of the victims.
