The following information was released today by the Spokesman for the Secretary-General: Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali met today with the Presidents of Bulgaria and Tajikistan at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
President Zhelyu Zhelev of Bulgaria informed the Secretary-General that Bulgaria, Turkey, Albania and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia had just signed an agreement for the development of an East-West corridor in the Balkans facilitating trade and economic exchanges.
They also discussed the effect on Bulgaria of sanctions against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the future of the United Nations operation in the former Yugoslavia.
In the Secretary-General's meeting with the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rakhmonov, discussions centred on how to restart the inter-Tajik talks and the need to have continuous negotiations which will not end until all the questions and disputes are resolved.
The question of a venue for the negotiations and various options in that connection were discussed. This and other matters will now be pursued in the region by the Secretary-General's Deputy Special Envoy in Tajikistan, Darko Silovic.
The Secretary-General thanked both Presidents for their presence in New York to participate in the special commemorative meeting of the General Assembly marking the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations.
