SECRETARY-GENERAL CONDEMNS KABUL BOMBING

The following statement was issued by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Sunday, 8 May:

The Secretary-General condemns the suspected suicide bombing which was carried out at an internet cafe in Kabul in the early evening of 7 May, killing three people including an international contractor working for the United Nations Office for Project Services.  At least six Afghan nationals were injured in the incident.

The Secretary-General is concerned about the increase in violence witnessed in recent weeks.  He calls upon the Government of Afghanistan, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation-led International Security Assistance Force for Afghanistan (ISAF), and the coalition forces to take the necessary measures to address the security situation.

The Secretary-General expresses his profound condolences to the bereaved families.
