The Secretary-General arrived in Ottawa Tuesday night, 21 November, at the start of a two-day official visit to Canada. He was received at the airport by Romeo LeBlanc, Governor-General of Canada, the Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations, Ambassador Robert Fowler, and senior officials of the Federal Government. The Secretary-General reviewed a guard of honour and delivered brief remarks in response to the Governor- General's welcoming statement. (See Press Release SG/SM/5818 of 22 November.)

At 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, 22 November, the Secretary-General laid a wreath at the Peace-keeping Monument. He was accompanied by the Minister of National Defence, David Collenette, and other senior officials. After the wreath- laying ceremony the Secretary-General met peace-keeping members from the Canadian Forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

At 10 a.m. the Secretary-General arrived at Parliament Hill, where he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, by the Chancellor of Carleton University, Arthur Kroeger. At 12:30 p.m. the Secretary-General will attend a luncheon in his honour given by Romeo LeBlanc, Governor-General of Canada and Mrs. Diana Fowler LeBlanc. The Secretary-General will deliver a toast, text of which will be available.

In the afternoon, the Secretary-General will attend the final meeting of the Canadian Committee for the Fiftieth Anniversary of the United Nations.

At 6 p.m. the Secretary-General is expected to deliver a public lecture at the Ottawa Congress Centre, as part of the World Leaders Series hosted by the United Nations Association of Canada and the Canadian Committee for the Fiftieth Anniversary of the United Nations. A copy of the Secretary-General's lecture will be available.

The Secretary-General will then attend the Gala dinner hosted by the United Nations Association of Canada. The text of the Secretary-General's toast will also be available.
