SECRETARY-GENERAL ARRIVES IN POLAND

The following was issued today by a spokesman for Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

The Secretary-General arrived in Warsaw, Poland, on Thursday, 9 November, at 2:30 p.m. local time. He was met at the airport by Minister in the Presidency Chancellory Andrzeg Ananicz and Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Eugeniosz Wyzner.

At 4:45 p.m. the Secretary-General will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. That will be followed, at 5 p.m., by a meeting with President Lech Walesa.

At 5:45 p.m. the Secretary-General and President Walesa will hold a joint press conference.

In the evening, at 8 p.m. the Secretary-General will be the guest of honour at a State dinner hosted by President Walesa.

Before leaving Geneva, at 10 a.m. the Secretary-General held a meeting with the Co-Chairman of the Steering Committee of the International Conference on the Former Yugoslavia, Thorvald Stoltenberg.

In Geneva on Wednesday, 8 November, at 5:15 p.m., the Secretary-General met with the Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Barzan Al Tikriti. The meeting lasted 30 minutes and dealt with the implementation of resolution 986 (1995) of the Security Council. The Secretary-General transmitted to the Ambassador the same message that he had transmitted to the Vice-President of Iraq, Taha M. Marouf, at United Nations Headquarters on 27 October.

At 6 p.m., the Secretary-General met with the Vice-Minister for European Affairs of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and Special Envoy of the President of Libya, M. Abdal Ati Obeidi, for 30 minutes.

At 7:30 p.m., when leaving the Palais des Nations, the Secretary-General made a statement to the press.
