SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS TULIAMENI KALOMOH OF NAMIBIA AS HIS SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR LIBERIA

Biographical Note Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed Tuliameni Kalomoh, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Namibia, as his Special Representative for Liberia. Mr. Kalomoh will visit New York for briefings at Headquarters next week, after which he will travel to Monrovia to take up his new assignment.

Mr. Kalomoh has been serving in the Foreign Ministry of Namibia since the country gained independence in 1990. He was Namibia's Ambassador to the United States from 1991 to 1996, with concurrent accreditation as High Commissioner to Canada. Before that, he served as Under-Secretary for Political and Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1991. The previous year, in his capacity as acting Under-Secretary for Political and Economic Affairs, Mr. Kalomoh accompanied President Sam Nujoma to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Conference in Lusaka and the Organization of African Unity (OAU) Summit in Addis Ababa on the occasion of Namibia's admittance as a member to these organizations. He also accompanied the country's Prime Minister to the United Nations on the occasion of Namibia's admission as a Member of the world body.

Between 1975 and 1989, Mr. Kalomoh held several important positions in the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO), including Special Assistant to the Regional Election Director in Oshakati (Northern Namibia); SWAPO Ambassador to India (1986 to 1990); SWAPO Chief Representative to France (1981 to 1986); and Chief Representative to West Africa (1976 to 1981).

Mr. Kalomoh was educated in Namibia and India. He holds a diploma from the Indian Academy of International Law and Diplomacy in New Delhi.

Mr. Kalomoh was born on 18 February 1948 in Onamutai, Namibia. He is married and has three children.
