SECOND COMMITTEE ELECTS OFFICERS, ADOPTS PROGRAMME OF WORK

Committee Chairman Bagher Asadi (Iran) Says He Intends To Organize Executive Briefings, Panel Discussions and Keynote Addresses

The Second Committee (Economic and Financial) this afternoon elected David Prendergast (Jamaica), Burak Ozugergin (Turkey) and Odyek Agona (Uganda) as Vice-Chairmen, and Uladimir Gerus (Belarus) as Rapporteur. The Committee also adopted, as orally revised, its programme of work for the fifty-third session.

According to the programme of work, most matters before the Committee are clustered under the following eight headings: macroeconomic policy questions; sectoral policy questions; operational activities for development; sustainable development and international cooperation; environment and sustainable development; training and research; permanent sovereignty for the Palestinian people in the occupied Palestinian territory over their natural resources; and the report of the Economic and Social Council.

In opening remarks, Committee Chairman Bagher Asadi (Iran), who was elected on 9 September, said that following the successful practice of last year, he intended to organize executive briefings by senior officials, panel discussions on agenda topics and keynote addresses. He would consult with the bureau concerning topics and agenda items and welcomed any suggestions from Committee members.

Before adoption of the programme of work, Committee Secretary Margaret Kelley outlined a number of minor technical alterations, including the renumbering of the agenda items.

The Committee will meet again at 10.00 a.m. on Tuesday, 6 October, to begin the general debate on the world economic situation.
