SECOND COMMITTEE APPROVES PROGRAMME OF WORK FEATURING FINANCING FOR DEVELOPMENT, DISASTER REDUCTION, POVERTY ERADICATION

Second Committee approves programme of work featuring financing

 
for development, disaster reduction, poverty eradication

 

Financing for development, disaster reduction strategies and poverty eradication were among the topics approved for consideration by the Second Committee (Economic and Financial) this afternoon as it approved its organization of work for the sixty-second session of the General Assembly.

The Committee also approved its work programme (document A/C.2/62/L.1), as orally revised, during the meeting, led by Chairperson Kirsti Lintonen (Finland), who welcomed members of the new Bureau: Vice-Chairpersons Peter Le Roux (South Africa), Hassan Ali Saleh (Lebanon) and Melanie Santizo-Sandoval (Guatemala), as well as Rapporteur Tamar Tchitanava (Georgia).

Issues slated for review included macroeconomic policy questions, such as the international financial system and external debt crises; follow-up to and implementation of the outcome of the International Conference on Financing for Development; globalization and interdependence; information and communications technology; and poverty eradication.

Other topics before the Committee are permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources; sustainable development; implementation of the outcome of the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) and strengthening of the United Nations Human Settlements Programmes (UN-HABITAT); implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification; operational activities for development; groups of countries in special situations, such as least developed and landlocked developing countries; and training and research.

The Second Committee will meet again at 10 a.m. on Monday, 8 October, to begin its general debate.
