BY SECURITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT

Following is today’s press statement on the transition in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by Security Council President Inocencio F. Arias (Spain):

Members of the Security Council welcomed the announcement made on 30 June 2003 by President Kabila of the composition of the Government of National Unity and transition in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

They expressed their support to the Government and the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and their continuing commitment to contribute to the consolidation of unity, peace, stability and prosperity throughout the country.

They encouraged in this regard the Congolese parties to take the necessary decisions in order to allow the transitional institutions to begin functioning effectively.

Members of the Security Council, however, reiterated the terms of the press statement of 27 June 2003 and their continuing concern over the latest developments in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
