PRESS STATEMENT ON GEORGIA BY SECURITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT

PRESS STATEMENT ON GEORGIA BY SECURITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT

Following is today’s press statement on Georgia by Security Council President Emyr Jones Parry (United Kingdom):

Members of the Security Council today heard the briefing of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Georgia, Heidi Tagliavini, who presented to the Council members the Secretary-General’s report on the activity of the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia.

Members of the Security Council shared the concern of the Secretary-General on the absence of tangible progress in the Georgian-Abkhaz peace process.

They reiterated their continued support for the relevant Security Council resolutions, in particular resolution 1554 of 29 July 2004.  They also underlined the need for renewed efforts to achieve a lasting political solution of the conflict with the support of the United Nations, in particular the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, with the assistance of the Russian Federation in its capacity as facilitator, as well as the Group of Friends.
