PRESS STATEMENT ON BURUNDI BY PRESIDENT OF SECURITY COUNCIL

Following is the text of today’s press statement on Burundi by M. Patricia Durrant (Jamaica), President of the Security Council:

Members of the Security Council welcomed the establishment of the Transitional Government of Burundi on 1 November.

Members of the Council paid tribute to the role of President Mandela, Neutral Facilitator, for his excellent contribution to the peace process.

Members of the Council commended the Governments and heads of State of the region for their efforts at furthering the peace process and in particular, note the positive contributions of the South African Government in providing protection for returning political leaders.
