PRESS STATEMENT ON ANGOLA BY SECURITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT

Following is today’s statement to the press by Security Council President Gunter Pleuger (Germany):

Members of the Security Council welcomed the steps taken by the Government of Angola towards the full implementation of the Lusaka Protocol.

Members of the Council welcomed the report of the Secretary General on the completion of the United Nations Mission in Angola, UNMA, on 15 February.  They commended the Secretary General's Special Representative in Angola, Ibrahim Gambari, for his efforts to bring this important phase of the United Nations involvement in Angola to a successful conclusion.

Council members expressed their readiness to carefully study the observations in the Secretary General's report (document S/2003/158).
