PRESS STATEMENT ON ANGOLA BY PRESIDENT OF SECURITY COUNCIL

Following is the text of today's press statement on Angola by the President of the Security Council, Ole Peter Kolby (Norway):

Under-Secretary-General Gambari briefed the Council today on the latest developments in Angola.

Members of the Council welcomed the recent political development including the Angolan Government’s statement of 13 March.

Council members expressed concern for the difficult humanitarian situation prevailing in the country.

The Council expressed support for Under-Secretary-General Gambari’s upcoming visit to Angola on behalf of the Secretary-General.

A substantial draft presidential statement was introduced.  It will be discussed on expert level and presented for adoption in due course.
