PRESS STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT OF SECURITY COUNCIL ON UNAMSIL HELICOPTER CRASH
Following is the text of the statement by the President of the Security Council, M. Patricia Durrant (Jamaica), on today’s crash of a UNAMSIL helicopter off the coast of Sierra Leone:
Members of the Council were briefed by Assistant-Secretary-General Hédi Annabi on the crash of the UNAMSIL helicopter off the coast of Sierra Leone yesterday, and the loss of the lives of four Ukrainian crew members, two Zambian military officers and a Bulgarian United Nations civilian air operations staff member.
Members of the Council expressed their heartfelt condolences to the Governments and families of the deceased.
Members of the Council also expressed their deep appreciation of the services rendered by these UNAMSIL staff members, who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of peace in Sierra Leone.
