Biographical Note
NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF UNITED KINGDOM PRESENTS CREDENTIALS (Based on information received from the Protocol and Liaison Service.)
Sir Emyr Jones Parry, the new Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Before his current appointment, Sir Emyr, who began serving in the Foreign Office of his country in 1973, was Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom on the North Atlantic Council (2001-2003). Prior to that, he was Political Director of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (1998-2001), dealing with policy advice to the Secretary of State. From 1997-1998, he was Director, European Union, with overall responsibility for policy, coordination and organization of his country’s presidency of the Union.
Previously, he served as first Deputy Political Director (1996-1997), with particular responsibility for Balkans and Aegean policy. From 1993 to 1996, Sir Emyr served in Madrid, Spain as Minister and Deputy Head of his country’s Mission there. He headed the foreign office’s European Community Department External from 1989 to 1993, where he was responsible for Government policy on all external aspects of the European Community.
From 1987 and 1989, he was Deputy Chef du Cabinet of the President of the European Parliament, which followed five years as a United Kingdom Representative to the European Union.
Sir Emyr was educated at Gwendraeth Grammar School. He attended University College in Cardiff, where he read theoretical physics. He subsequently received a doctorate degree in polymer physics at Saint Catherine’s College, Cambridge.
Born on 21 September 1947, he is married with two sons.
