NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF RUSSIAN FEDERATION PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Andrey I. Denisov, the new Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Denisov was the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, a post he had held since February 2002.  In the previous two years, he had been the Federation’s Ambassador to Egypt.  And from 1997 to 2000, he served as Director of the Department of Economic Cooperation, in Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ambassador Denisov also held a five-year post -– from 1992 to 1997 –- as a Counsellor, Senior Counsellor and Minster-Counsellor at the Russian Federation’s Embassy in the People’s Republic of China.  An economics expert, who is fluent in English and Chinese, he also represented his Government in another posting in the People’s Republic:  from 1978 to 1981, as an economist in the trade mission.  And, from 1981 to 1991, he served as an expert on the People’s Republic for the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

His association with the People’s Republic stretches back nearly 30 years, when in 1973 and 1974, after graduating from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, he was an interpreter for the trade mission there.  

Ambassador Denisov received his bachelor’s degree in 1978 from the Institute of International Political and Economic Studies.  He also has a doctorate degree in economics.

Born in Kharkov in 1952, Mr. Denisov is married and has a daughter.
