Biographical Note
NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF PHILIPPINES PRESENTS CREDENTIALS (Based on information received from the Protocol and Liaison Service.)
Hilario G. Davide, the new Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Davide served as Senior Presidential Adviser on Electoral Reforms.
From 1991 until 2005, Mr. Davide was a member of the Philippines Supreme Court, serving as Chief Justice from 1998 until his retirement in 2005. He was an Associate Justice from 1991 until 1998. During his time at the Supreme Court, he chaired numerous committees, divisions and tribunals.
Before joining the Court, Mr. Davide chaired two separate fact-finding commissions (1989-1991), as well as the Commission on Elections (1988-1990) and the Constitutional Commission of 1986, which drafted the Philippines 1987 Constitution.
From 1978 until 1984, Mr. Davide was an assemblyman in the Interim Batasang Pambansa, where he became the first minority floor leader (1978-1979).
He began his career as the private secretary to the Vice-Governor and then to the Governor of Cebu (1959-1963).
Mr. Davide received his Bachelor of Science in jurisprudence from the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City, in 1958, and his Bachelor of Laws from the same school one year later.
Born in 1935 in Colawin, Argao, Cebu, Mr. Davide is married with 5 children and 11 grandchildren.
