NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF JORDAN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

(Based on information provided by the Protocol and Liaison Service.)

Mohammed F. Al-Allaf, the new Permanent Representative of Jordan to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Allaf was a general in the Jordanian Armed Forces.  Commissioned in 1969, his military career spanned some 38 years, and included, between 1989 and 1991, command of Jordan’s military contingent in the country’s contribution to the United Nations Angola Verification Mission (UNAVEM I and II).  After that tour of duty in Angola, he developed Jordan’s military peacekeeping doctrine and was charged with equipping, training and preparing troops to serve under the United Nations flag.

As a former Commandant of the Royal Jordanian National Defence College (2002-2006), Mr. Allaf laid the academic basis for the country’s theory of national security.  As Assistant Chief of Staff and Chief of Strategic Planning (2006-2007), he headed a team of generals in carrying out a strategic defence review aimed at developing the Jordanian Armed Forces’ transformation strategy, which is now in place.

Mr. Allaf holds a bachelor’s degree in military science and a master’s degree in management and military science from Mu’ta University in Jordan.  He also earned a master’s degree in national security strategy from the National Defense University, Washington, D.C.

Born in Amman, Jordan, in 1950, he is married and has five children.
