NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF INDIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Biographical Note

New Permanent Representative of INDIA Presents Credentials

(Based on information received from the Protocol and Liaison Service.)

Nirupam Sen, the new Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Sen was India’s High Commissioner in Sri Lanka.  He has also served as Charg矤’Affaires (Hungary); Political Counsellor (United Kingdom); Deputy High Commissioner (Sri Lanka); and Minister (Economic) and Deputy Chief of Mission (Russian Federation).  In addition, he served as India’s Ambassador to Bulgaria, concurrently accredited to The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and Ambassador to Norway, concurrently accredited to Iceland.

Since joining the Indian Foreign Service in 1969, he has held a number of posts in India’s Ministry of External Affairs, including Deputy Secretary in charge of East Europe and the Americas, as well as Joint Secretary of the Ministry.

Mr. Sen received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Delhi University, India.  He taught at the NationalDefenceCollege in New Delhi from 1993 to 1995. 

Born in 1947, Mr. Sen is married, with two children.
