NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF ALGERIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

Biographical Note

New permanent representative of ALGERIA presents credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, Mourad Benmehidi, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Benmehidi was Algeria’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York (2003-2008), and a Minister Counsellor at Algeria’s Mission to the United Nations (2001-2003).

From 1995 to 2001, he occupied several posts at the Foreign Ministry of Algeria, where he was acting Deputy Director for Eastern Asia from 1995 to 1996, and Deputy Director responsible for Northern Europe from 1997 to 2001.  He was in charge of Human Rights at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1988 to 1991.

Mr. Benmehidi served at Algeria’s Embassies in Bonn, Germany, from 1991 to 1995, and in Harare, Zimbabwe, from 1986 to 1988.

Having started his career as a lawyer in 1979, Mr. Benmehidi began his work at the Foreign Ministry in 1982, where he was in charge of the Office of South-South Cooperation and Regional and Interregional Conferences from 1982 to 1986.

Proficient in Arabic, French, English and German, Mr. Benmehidi received his law degree from the University of Algiers in 1976.

Born on 1 February 1953 in Annaba, Algeria, he is married with three children.
