Biographical Note

NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF LUXEMBOURG PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

The new Permanent Representative of Luxembourg to the United Nations, Jean-Marc Hoscheit, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Hoscheit served as his country’s Ambassador to France (1998-2003).  In that time, he was also Permanent Representative of Luxembourg to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and Permanent Delegate to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

From 1989 to 1998, Mr. Hoscheit served in the Permanent Mission of Luxembourg to the European Union, where he was in charge of various working groups.  During that time, his country served as president of the European Union in 1991 and 1997.  From 1993 to 1998, he was the Deputy Permanent Representative of Luxembourg to the European Union.

In the Foreign Affairs Ministry from 1986 to 1989, Mr. Hoscheit worked in the Directorate of Political Affairs, in charge of various geographical sectors.  From 1985 to 1986, he was Charg矤e Mission at the Foreign Affairs Ministry when Luxembourg held the European Union presidency in 1985.  Also in the 1980s, he was his country’s European correspondent to the European Political Cooperation.

From 1982 to 1985, Mr. Hoscheit was a researcher, then lecturer and senior lecturer at the European Institute of Public Administration of Maastricht (Netherlands).

At the University of Strasbourg in France, he received a master’s degree in law, and another in political science.  Several of his works on European political and institutional questions, as well as on the diplomatic history of Luxembourg, have been published.  He speaks the following languages:  Luxembourgish; French; German; English; Italian; Dutch (basic).

Born in Luxembourg on 11 October 1958, Mr. Hoscheit is married with two children.
