Biographical Note
NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF HONDURAS PRESENTS CREDENTIALS (Based on information provided by the Protocol and Liaison Service.)
The new Permanent Representative of Honduras to the United Nations, Jorge Arturo Reina Idiaquez, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Reina served as Secretary-General to the Executive Council of the Liberal Party of Honduras from 2005 to 2007 and was a presidential pre-candidate of the same party in 2005. From 1994 to 2002, he was President of the party’s Executive Council and Secretary-General of its National Directory.
Mr. Reina was Minister Adviser to President Carlos Roberto Flores Facusse from 1998 to 2002 and served President Carlos Roberto Reina Idiaquez in the same capacity from 1994 to 1998.
He served four terms as a Member of Parliament from 1990 to 2006 and was Speaker of the Liberal Party in Parliament in addition to holding the posts of president and vice-president on several parliamentary committees.
Mr. Reina’s academic activity included two consecutive terms as Dean of the National University of Honduras between 1973 and 1979; Director of the University Center for General Studies from 1970 to 1973; Academic Director of the National University of Honduras from 1969 to 1970; Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences of the University of El Salvador from 1966 to 1969; and Secretary of the University Reform Committee from 1960 to 1963.
Mr. Reina has been awarded the “Orden de Bernardo O’Higgins en el Grado de Gran Comendador” by the Government of Chile; the Orden Mexicana del Aguila Aztecan en el Grado de Insignia” by the Government of Mexico; and the “Cruz de las Fuerzas Armadas” by the Armed Forces of Honduras.
The holder of doctorate degrees in political science and law from the University of El Salvador and the National University of Mexico as well as a degree in law and social sciences from the National University of Honduras, he has been awarded two honorary doctorate degrees and a gold medal for academic excellence.
Born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, on 21 March 1935, Mr. Reina is married with four children.
