MINISTERIAL DEBATES OF ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL TO BE AVAILABLE ON INTERNET FOR THE FIRST TIME

(Reissued as received.)

GENEVA, 15 June (UN Information Service) -- For the first time in its history, the United Nations Economic and Social Council, which is holding its annual session at the Palais des Nations in Geneva from 5 to 30 July, will be on the Internet. It will be possible to follow directly, in text as well as sound and picture, the ministerial debates which will be held from 5 to 8 July on a web page which has been created especially at the following address: www.unog.ch/broadcast.

In addition to the debates, the web page will offer information on the programme of work of the Council, published documents and cultural events being held on the sidelines of the meeting.

The fight against poverty and its political, economic, social and financial implications will be at the centre of the discussions. The Economic and Social Council will also be reviewing humanitarian affairs and development in Africa. On the morning of 6 July, a special meeting will be devoted to the tenth anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The implementation of these rights continues to be a subject of grave concern at the end of the twentieth century.
