MARK KROEKER OF UNITED STATES APPOINTED CIVILIAN POLICE ADVISER

IN PEACKEEPING DEPARTMENT

The Secretary-General today announced the appointment of Mark Kroeker of the United States as the new Civilian Police Adviser in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

Mark Kroeker is currently serving as the Police Commissioner for the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).  He previously served as the Chief of Police of Portland, Oregon, and, prior to that, as the Deputy Commissioner of Operations for the United Nations International Police Task Force (IPTF) in Bosnia and Herzegovina.  As a United States Department of Justice Consultant, he worked to help develop the Haitian National Police.  He was also a member of the United States Police Development Projects in Rwanda and Burundi.

He has been honoured with numerous awards, including the Armand Arabian Award for public service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s “Director’s Award for Exceptional Public Service”, the Raoul Wallenberg “Save the Children Award” and the Anti-Defamation League’s “First Annual Sherwood Family Prize for Combating Hate”.

He holds an MA degree in international public administration and a BA degree in criminal justice.  He will take over from the current Civilian Police Adviser, Kiran Bedi, of India.
