IRAQ SANCTIONS COMMITTEE HEARS PRESENTATION BY LLOYD'S REGISTER TEAM

On Thursday, 25 January, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 661 (1990), which is monitoring the sanctions against Iraq, heard a presentation by the Lloyd's Register Cargo Examination and Verification Team. Based on an agreement with the Government of Jordan, the Team is administering a system that monitors and examines cargo at the Port of Aqaba, Jordan, to ensure the strict implementation of resolution 661 and subsequent relevant Security Council resolutions concerning Iraq.

The presentation was based on the report of the Lloyd's Register to the Committee, apprising the members of the work carried out during the first year of its operation. One of the areas mentioned by Lloyd's concerned the notification procedure followed by the Jordanian authorities with regard to the supply of foodstuffs to Iraq. The Committee took note of the existing procedures.
