IRAQ SANCTIONS COMMITTEE ADOPTS FURTHER MEASURES TO EXPEDITE PROCESSING OF HUMANITARIAN SUPPLIES TO IRAQ

The following was issued today by the Iraq Sanctions Committee:

On 20 August, the Security Council Committee established by resolution 661 (1990) concerning the situation between Iraq and Kuwait approved the following suggestions by its Secretariat:

(1) To expedite further the processing of applications to ship humanitarian goods to Iraq under Security Council resolution 986 (1995), the form of "Notification or Request to Ship Goods to Iraq" and the "guidance note" on its completion have been revised. A copy of the revised form and guidance note will be circulated to all Member States shortly.

(2) To facilitate the delivery of humanitarian supplies to Iraq, the initial validity period of all approval letters to ship humanitarian supplies to Iraq will be extended from the previous 120 days to 180 days, with a possible further extension of another 90 days upon request.

The above-mentioned measures are to be implemented by the Secretariat as from September 1997.
