Note to Correspondents

INTERNATIONAL PHOTO EXHIBIT ‘TALES FROM A GLOBALIZING WORLD’ OPENS AT UNITED NATIONS HEADQUARTERS 20 JULY

An international photographic exhibition entitled “Tales from a Globalizing World” will open with a formal ceremony and reception in the General Assembly Visitors’ Lobby at 6 p.m. on Thursday, 20 July.

The exhibit will be opened by Ahmad Fawzi, Director of the News and Media Division of the United Nations Department of Public Information, and will include statements by Alicia Bౣena Ibarra, Chef de Cabinet; Peter Maurer, Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the United Nations; and Daniel Schwartz, curator of the exhibit.

The exhibition project is an initiative launched in 2002 by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).  The SCD entrusted the role of producer to the renowned Swiss photographer Daniel Schwartz, who commissioned 10 photographers from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America.  The result is a book and an exhibition devoted to 10 photo reportages by different, well-known photographers, showing “snapshots” of a phenomenon in constant transformation and causing deep-seated changes at the global level.  These pictorial accounts illustrate the positive and negative consequences of globalization on the daily lives of people culturally, economically and socially, both in the West and in the countries of the South.

The 10 photographers of the exhibition and their stories are Akinbode Akinibiyi of Nigeria (Black Atlantic Divinities); Ziyo Gafic of Bosnia-Herzegovina (Quest for Identity); Tim Hetherington of England (Healing Sport); Philip Jones Griffiths of Wales (Independence and Transition); Thomas Kern of Switzerland (Homeland of Globalization); Shehzad Noorani of Bangladesh (Childhood Denied); Cristina Nuñez of Spain (Made in Italy); Andreas Seibert of Switzerland (Somewhere from Nowhere); Stephen Vanfleteren of Belgium (Facing Stories); and Bertien Van Manen of the Netherlands (Paradise in Boxes).

This exhibition is sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations, in collaboration with the United Nations Departments of Public Information.
