UK MINE INFORMATION AND TRAINING CENTRE GOES LIVE

Ministry Of Defence (National)

MINISTRY OF DEFENCE 231/97

The UK Mine Information and Training Centre (MITC) - the focal point for training and exchange of mine awareness information in the UK - is now fully operational.

Defence Secretary, George Robertson, said: " I am delighted that the centre is now up and running and the UK is playing a pivotal role in tackling the global scourge of landmines which kill or maim so many innocent people."

Following an invitation issued by Mr Robertson to his Russian counterpart on his recent visit to Moscow, plans are now underway for a joint UK Russian workshop on de-mining at the MITC to take place later in the year.

The MITC provides and coordinates training and exchange of mine related information between military, governmental and sponsored non governmental organisations both within the UK and internationally.
