TOXTETH''S `CONSTABLE PAUL'' SHINING EXAMPLE OF COMMUNITY POLICING
HOME OFFICE 039/98 28 January 1998 TOXTETH''S "CONSTABLE PAUL" SHINING EXAMPLE OF COMMUNITY POLICING: JACK STRAW
Merseyside police officer Paul Hurst was today hailed as a shining example of community policing by Home Secretary Jack Straw.
Mr Straw was speaking as he awarded PC Hurst the Community Police Officer of the Year Award at a special ceremony in London.
"I am delighted that the work of PC Hurst has been recognised in this way. He has shown extraordinary dedication to tackling crime in the local community.
"Not only has he successfully identified and provided intelligence on known criminals in the area - putting himself at considerable personal risk - but he has responded to the local community''s concerns about crime and other issues with exceptional commitment.
"His dealings with the local Somali and other ethnic communities have shown outstanding sensitivity, and his charity and school activities with local children are helping to shape the next generation.
"In Government we are doing all we can - for example through our Crime and Disorder Bill - to turn the vicious cycle of crime into a virtuous circle.
"Officers such as PC Hurst and the other nominees for today''s award are already working at the heart of the community to do just that.
"I understand that he is simply known as "Constable Paul" by the community he serves. That alone shows the respect and affection in which he is held.
"He is a shining example of community policing at its best."
