Shetland Coastguard were tonight alerted to the 53,387 gross registered tonne tanker the `Alandia Lynx' which reported at 20:17 hrs that she had lost her main engine power at the entrance to Sullom Voe, and was drifting northwards. Her drift was assessed to be 350 degrees at two knots.
The Master reported that the tanker, which is not carrying any cargo, had earlier moved astern but could not now move ahead and required assistance. Two stand-by vessels from Sullom Voe, the `Tystie' and the `Dunter' were alerted to go to her aid. Upon arrival lines from the tugs were put on the tanker to correct her drift and hold her steady whilst she made running repairs which the Master indicated would take about 3 hours.
Alex Wylie, Shetland Watch Manager said:
" The vessel got into difficulties at the entrance to Sullom Voe in force 6 to 7 winds south south west, and began to drift northward. Visibility is good in the area tonight between 5 and 10 miles with a moderate sea swell. At just after 10.00 pm this evening the crew then reported back that the repairs had been completed and she was coming into the terminal under her own power. The incident did not affect working at the terminal in anyway, and our thanks are due to the crews of the tugs for responding so quickly to calls for assistance."
