PROPOSED ACQUISITION BY HEPWORTH PLC OF NAYLOR DRAINAGE LTD AND NAYLOR PLASTIC LTD.

REFERENCE LAID ASIDE

The Competition Commission has laid aside the reference concerning the proposed acquisition by Hepworth PLC of Naylor Drainage Ltd and Naylor Plastic Ltd.

This reference was made to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission on 30 March 1999 by Dr Kim Howells, Competition and Consumer Affairs Minister, DTI.

It appears to the Competition Commission, on the basis of information received from the companies concerned, that the proposal to make the arrangements identified in the terms of reference has been abandoned.

Accordingly the Commission have, with the Secretary of State''s consent, laid the reference aside.

Notes for Editors

1. This reference was made by Dr Kim Howells, acting on behalf of the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, on 30 March 1999 (see DTI press notice P/99/278). It has been laid aside in accordance with the provisions of section 75(5) of the Fair Trading Act 1973.

2. On 1 April the Monopolies and Mergers Commission was dissolved and its functions were transferred to the Competition Commission.
