PLANS PUBLISHED FOR A428 CAXTON COMMON TO HARDWICK

EHA29/03

PLANS PUBLISHED FOR A428 CAXTON COMMON TO HARDWICK

Details of a major scheme to cut accidents and improve safety on the A428 between the Caxton Gibbet roundabout and Hardwick, near Cambridge, were published today.

The £32m scheme involves the construction of about 4.5 miles (6.9 km) of new dual carriageway and a major junction to replace the Hardwick roundabout. The scheme would incorporate the 1.2 mile (2 km) length of dual carriageway currently being built to serve the Cambourne development. The existing A428 would be downgraded to a local road between Cambourne and Cambridge.

There will be an opportunity for the public to see the proposals for the new scheme at an exhibition of the plans being held at Dry Drayton Village Hall on Friday 7 March from 1.00 pm until 8.00 pm and at Bourn Village Hall on Saturday 8 March from 10.00 am until 4.00 pm.

Highways Agency Project Manager Geoff Keeble said:

"This scheme would make this busy route safer for road users and people living alongside the existing road. It would provide a safer and better environment, as well as reducing journey times for through traffic".

Between the Caxton Gibbet roundabout and the new dual carriageway at Cambourne, the scheme would run to the north of the existing road. The side road leading to Elsworth is being diverted as part of the present A428 Cambourne improvement.

To the east of Cambourne the new dual carriageway would run to the south of the existing road as far as Childerley Gate where it would cross the existing A428 before continuing on the north side of the present road to join the dual carriageway at Hardwick. The existing A428 would be realigned to pass over the proposed dual carriageway. A full junction allowing all turning movements would be provided at Hardwick.

Plans of the scheme are available from the Highways Agency or can be seen at Cambridgeshire County Council, Shire Hall, Cambridge CB3 0AP; South Cambridgeshire District Council, South Cambridge Hall, 9-11 Hills Road, Cambridge CB2 1PB; Bourn Post Office, 8 Short Street, Bourn, Cambridge CB3 7SG; Hardwick Post Office, 99 Cambridge Road, Hardwick, Cambridgeshire CB3 7QG; Papworth Everard Post Office, 15 Ermine Street North, Papworth Everard, Cambridgeshire CB3 8RH; Cambridge Central Library, 7 Lion House, Cambridge CB2 3QD; Cambourne Concept Centre, Cambourne Road, Cambourne, Cambridgeshire CB3 8LD; The Highway Agency, Information Point, Ground Floor, Romney House, 43 Marsham Street, London SW1P 3HW and the Highways Agency, Operations Directorate, 49-53 Goldington Road, Bedford MK40 3LL,
