OPEN GOVERNMENT INITIATIVE ON IMMIGRATION

Home Office (National)

HOME OFFICE 382/97

Instructions to immigration staff are to be disclosed publicly for the first time, the Home Office Immigration Minister Mike O'Brien has announced.

Mr O'Brien said he planned to make the Home Office's internal instructions to caseworkers available as soon as possible in 1998.

He said:

"This is a substantial step in open government. It is my intention to make these instructions available as soon as possible in the New Year. There is a considerable amount of material, extending to many volumes, and we are examining how it can be disclosed.

"It is likely that a text will be made available in the House of Commons Library and, given the amount of material, we are considering whether it is possible to make it available on the Internet for ease of access."

The instructions will be disclosed in accordance with the Code of Practice on Open Government.
