NUCLEAR SAFETY NEWSLETTER PUBLISHED

HEALTH AND SAFETY EXECUTIVE E202:97

Issue 14 of Nuclear Safety Newsletter is published by the Nuclear Safety Directorate (NSD) of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) today.

The newsletter gives an insight into the sort of radiation safety issues that HSE deals with, relating not only to the work of its Nuclear Safety Directorate (including the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate) but to protection from sources of radiation in the workplace in general. International activities are also covered.

The aim is to promote awareness of the very high standards of safety which nuclear operators in Britain have to achieve, and to show how the NSD satisfies itself that the standards have been met. The newsletter is issued three times a year.

Contents in this issue include: the licensing of AWE sites (editorial); consent for THORP operation; Chapelcross reactor 2 remaining shutdown for weld defect checks; improvements to seismic resistance at Calder Hall and Chapelcross; NII inspection of safety management at three BNFL sites; assistance to central and eastern Europe; HSE visit to Chernobyl; progress on Basic Safety Standards Directive regulations; incidents in first quarter of 1997; and the renaming of the Health and Safety Commission's advisory body, ACSNI, which becomes Nuclear Safety Advisory Committee (NuSAC).

Nuclear Safety Newsletter is obtainable free of charge from Chris Simon, Health and Safety Executive, Third Floor North, Rose Court, 2 Southwark Bridge, London SE1 9HS.

Public Enquiries: NSD Information Centre, St Peter's House, Bootle, L20 3LZ.
