HSE INVESTIGATES BARRY FREIGHT TRAIN DERAILMENT

Health and Safety Executive (National)

HEALTH AND SAFETY EXECUTIVE E247:97

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is investigating the derailment of a freight train near Barry, South Wales, on Saturday 27 December 1997. The incident happened at 22.15 when a tank wagon containing vinyl chloride monomer - a liquified gas - derailed at low speed about a quarter of a mile south west of Cadoxton Station, near the entrance to Barry Docks. Although the wagon came off the rails and turned on its side there was no leak of gas.

An HSE Railway Inspector began an investigation at first light on Sunday 28 December. HSE's work on site is now complete but follow up work is continuing.

The recovery of the wagon is underway and HSE is satisfied with the way this is being handled.

NOTE TO EDITORS

No-one from HSE is available for interview at present.
