FCO DAILY BULLETIN: WEDNESDAY 31 DECEMBER 1997

Foreign and Commonwealth Office (National) FCO DAILY BULLETIN: WEDNESDAY 31 DECEMBER 1997

FOREIGN AND COMMONWEALTH OFFICE

The Foreign Office issued the following press release:

KENYAN ELECTIONS

Foreign Office Minister Tony Lloyd said:

"I share the widespread concern at the confusion and delays that have accompanied the election process in Kenya, and deeply regret the deaths and outbreaks of violence over the last few days.

The Kenyan people have shown great patience. We share their wish that they should decide for themselves the future of their country in peaceful, free and fair elections.

Reports of irregularities in the election process have raised question marks over the efficiency and credibility of the elections. Britain has helped to finance a large number of independent election observers. We shall study their reports closely before making a final assessment as to whether the will of the Kenyan people has been genuinely reflected in the outcome."
