AS RELEASED AT 1300hrs ON 31/12/99 GMC 1

The first countries in the world have entered the new Millennium. A tiny island in the South Pacific, Millennium Island, was the first to welcome the New Year. At 11am GMT New Zealand celebrated the New Year and there have been no reports of any bug problems.

UK

Last minute preparations are being made for celebrations in the UK. In London fireworks officially marked the start of the Millennium party in the capital at 11am.

There have been no problems reported today in the UK with the Millennium Bug.

An irresponsible prank affecting Railtrack''s website was quickly detected and resolved. The organisation''s website was hacked and a ''No trains today'' message put up. Problem has been resolved and site was back to normal at 11.30am. For more information contact Railtrack Press Office.
