Mauritania: €26 million funding for project for removing wrecks from Bay of Nouhadibou in Mauritania
IP/06/1119 Brussels, 23 August 2006 Mauritania: €26 million funding for project for removing wrecks from Bay of Nouhadibou in Mauritania The purpose of the Stabex funding provided by the Commission for this project is to improve navigation and shipping safety in the Bay of Nouadhibou and hence to increase industrial activity in the port. The principal beneficiary will be the fishing sector, but the action undertaken will have a wider economic spill-over for the country in general. A wide variety of vessels use the Bay of Nouadhibou because of the presence of various types of activity (trade, industrial fishing and small-scale fishing port). The wrecks currently lying in the Bay are a real hazard to shipping and have caused the volume of traffic to fall in recent years; this has been particularly appreciable for fishing vessels, with obvious economic and social consequences for the Mauritanian State and people. The plan for removing the wrecks includes environmental components in order to handle any risk of physical or chemical pollution. The results of this €26.2 million project approved by the Commission should be an improvement in shipping conditions, the application of safety standards in the Bay of Nouadhibou, environmental protection and an enhancement of administrative capacity. |
