EESC biennial conference "Living Europe: a new challenge for civil society" 18 and 19 September 2006 EESC, 99 rue Belliard, B-1040 Brussels
On 18 and 19 September 2006, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is holding its biennial conference on "Living Europe: a new challenge for civil society", at the end of EESC president Anne-Marie Sigmund's term of office. Several guests including Jacques Delors, former president of the European Commission, and Michel Delebarre, president of the Committee of the Regions (CoR), will be attending the conference, which will discuss European identity from the perspective of common values, the European social model and policies which display a European character.
The conference will be opened by Anne-Marie Sigmund, outgoing EESC president, and her counterpart from the Committee of the Regions, Michel Delebarre. Jacques Delors, former president of the European Commission, will present the theme of the conference. To mark this occasion, the joint headquarters of the EESC and the CoR will be named the "Jacques Delors Building" (for more information, see press release No 86/2006)
The conference will be held in three sessions.
Session 1: European values: "identifying policies that translate into the effective and balanced application of European values";
Session 2: European society: "the interdependence between the culture of economy, the culture of solidarity, and the culture of dialogue and participation";
Session 3: European identity: the final session will sum up the work of preceding sessions, and will tackle the ambitious topic of "mobilising people around a vision of the future of European society".
