The LIFE regulation adopted by the Council on 21 May 1992 provided for the joint financing of demonstration and technical-assistance projects in the field of environmental protection. The Commission recently decided, on a proposal by Mr Karel Van Miert, the Commission member responsible for the environment, jointly to finance a second tranche1 of: - 23 projects amounting to ECU 25 million on the protection of habitats and nature, - 26 projects amounting to a total of ECU 12.6 million on the promotion of the sustainable development and quality of the environment. As part of that tranche an initial contract has recently been signed between the Commission and the Hellenic Republic. This contract is the first of a series of 23 concerning the joint financing of nature- conservation projects under the LIFE instrument in 1992. A sum of ECU 1.2 million is granted for improving the conservation and management of national parks in Greece. * * * 1 See IP 705, 10.9.1992.
