June 2006 compared to May 2006 Industrial producer prices up by 0.2% in euro area Up by 0.1% in EU25

The euro area1 industrial producer price index2 rose by 0.2% in June 2006 compared with the previous month, and EU25 prices increased by 0.1%. In May3 prices increased by 0.3% in the euro area and by 0.1% in the EU25.

In June 2006 compared to June 2005, industrial producer prices gained 5.8% in the euro area and 6.4% in the EU25.

These figures come from Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities.

Monthly changes

In June 2006, compared to the previous month, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector increased by 0.2% in both the euro area and the EU25. Prices in the energy sector rose by 0.2% in the euro area, but fell by 0.4% in the EU25. Intermediate goods rose by 0.3% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU25. In both zones, non-durable consumer goods increased by 0.3% and capital goods by 0.1%, while durable consumer goods decreased by 0.1%.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases were registered in Denmark (+2.2%), Lithuania (+1.1%), Luxembourg and Hungary (both +0.8%). The only decrease was recorded in the United Kingdom (-0.9%), while prices in Greece and Spain remained unchanged.

Annual changes

In June 2006, compared to June 2005, and excluding the energy sector, industrial prices increased by 3.0% in both the euro area and the EU25. Prices in the energy sector rose by 15.7% and 17.6% respectively. In both zones, intermediate goods gained 5.2%. Non-durable consumer goods increased by 1.9% in the euro area and by 1.8% in the EU25. Durable consumer goods rose by 1.6% and 1.5% respectively. Capital goods gained 1.2% in the euro area and 1.3% in the EU25.

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases were observed in Luxembourg (+14.0%), the United Kingdom (+9.7%), the Netherlands (+9.4%) and Slovakia (+9.1%), and the lowest in the Czech Republic (+1.9%), Ireland (+2.0%) and Slovenia (+2.7%).

Euro area: Belgium, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal and Finland. The index of producer prices shows (in the national currency of the country concerned) changes in the ex-works sale prices of all products sold on the domestic markets of the various countries, excluding imports. Euro area and EU25 indices refer to overall weighted price changes. The figures are not adjusted. Missing observations from Member States for the calculation of the euro area and the EU25 are estimated. Data of previous months have been revised compared to those issued in News Release 88/2006 of 4 July 2006. However the monthly growth rates for total industry excluding construction published in this News Release for May 2006 remain the same for both the euro area and the EU25.
