In January 2008, compared with December 2007, the volume of retail trade1 grew by 0.4% in the euro area2 (EA15) and by 0.6% in the EU272. In December 20073 retail trade fell by 0.1% and 0.2% respectively.
In January 20084, compared with January 2007, the retail sales index decreased by 0.1% in the euro area, but rose by 1.8% in the EU27.
Monthly changes
In January 2008, compared with December 2007, “food, drinks and tobacco” grew by 0.6% in the euro area and by 0.7% in the EU27. The non food sector gained 0.4% and 0.6% respectively.
Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade rose in twelve and fell in four. The highest increases were observed in Belgium (+9.5%), Lithuania (+7.4%) and Portugal (+4.1%), and the largest decreases in Latvia (-1.5%) and Spain (-1.1%).
Annual changes
In January 2008, compared with January 2007, retail trade of “food, drinks and tobacco” fell by 1.0% in the euro area, but rose by 0.2% in the EU27. The non food sector grew by 0.4% and 2.8% respectively.
Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade rose in twelve, decreased in three and remained unchanged in Denmark. The highest increases were observed in Slovakia (+15.6%), Bulgaria (+14.8%), Lithuania (+14.5%) and Poland (+8.3%), and the largest decrease in Spain (-2.4%).

Based on data adjusted for working days and seasonal effects.The seasonally adjusted euro area and EU series are calculated by aggregating the working day adjusted series from individual Member States and performing an adjustment for seasonal effects on these series. Therefore the European seasonally adjusted figures for total retail trade are based directly on the working day adjusted series coming from the Member States and not on an aggregation of the seasonally adjusted indices from the Member States. The euro area and EU seasonally adjusted growth rates might differ from the weighted growth rates of the individual Member States. This procedure also implies that the aggregation of total retail trade is not directly based on the published details (food, non-food).

Retail sale not in stores 52.6 (except for mail orders) and retail sale of second-hand goods 52.5 are not published as separate sectors as they are not required as such by the STS-Regulation. They are however included in the ”non food products” aggregate.
The euro area (EA13) consisted of 13 Member States up to 31 December 2007: Belgium, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia and Finland. From 1 January 2008 the euro area (EA15) also includes Cyprus and Malta.The EU27 includes Belgium (BE), Bulgaria (BG), the Czech Republic (CZ), Denmark (DK), Germany (DE), Estonia (EE), Greece (EL), Spain (ES), France (FR), Ireland (IE), Italy (IT), Cyprus (CY), Latvia (LV), Lithuania (LT), Luxembourg (LU), Hungary (HU), Malta (MT), the Netherlands (NL), Austria (AT), Poland (PL), Portugal (PT), Romania (RO), Slovenia (SI), Slovakia (SK), Finland (FI), Sweden (SE) and the United Kingdom (UK).
As part of Eurostat's guidelines for the dissemination of data when the EU or euro area is enlarged, the aggregate data series commented on in this News Release refer to the official composition of the euro area in the most recent month for which data is available. Thus News Releases with data for months up to December 2007 commented on EA13 series, while Releases with data for January 2008 onwards comment on EA15 series.
3.Data of previous months have been revised compared to those issued in the News Release 17/2008 of 5 February 2008, when the figures published for December 2007 were -0.1% in the euro area and 0.0% in the EU27 for the monthly variations, and -2.0% in the euro area and -0.1% in the EU27 for the annual variations.
Germany revised its national series from January 2006, generating a discontinuity between December 2005 and January 2006. In the interests of consistency over time and with other Member States and to obtain a proper time series for the euro area and EU, Eurostat has adjusted the level of the series for Germany to eliminate the discontinuity.
