January 2008 compared with December 2007 Industrial producer prices up by 0.8% in euro area Up by 1.0% in EU27
In January 2008 compared with December 2007, the industrial producer price index1 rose by 0.8% in the euro area2 (EA15) and by 1.0% in the EU272. In December3 prices increased by 0.1% and 0.3% respectively.
In January 2008 compared with January 2007, industrial producer prices gained 4.9% in the euro area and 5.8% in the EU27.
These figures come from Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities.

Monthly changes
In January 2008, compared with the previous month, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector gained 0.6% in the euro area and 0.7% in the EU27. Prices in the energy sector increased by 1.4% and 1.7% respectively. Intermediate goods rose by 0.9% in the euro area and by 1.0% in the EU27. Durable consumer goods increased by 0.8% and 0.7% respectively. Non-durable consumer goods gained 0.5% in the euro area and 0.6% in the EU27. In both zones, capital goods rose by 0.3%.
Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases were registered in Hungary (+5.1%), Finland (+2.4%) and Lithuania (+2.3%), and the lowest in Ireland (+0.3%), Italy (+0.4%), France and Luxembourg (both +0.5%).
Annual changes
In January 2008, compared with January 2007, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector increased by 3.3% in the euro area and by 3.6% in the EU27. Prices in the energy sector rose by 10.6% and 12.6% respectively. Non-durable consumer goods gained 4.6% in the euro area and 4.7% in the EU27. Intermediate goods increased by 3.7% and 4.2% respectively. In both zones, durable consumer goods gained 2.1%. Capital goods rose by 1.3% in the euro area and by 1.4% in the EU27.
Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases were observed in Lithuania (+15.8%), Denmark (+15.6%) and Bulgaria (+13.0%), and the lowest in Germany (+3.3%), Ireland and Finland (both +3.9%).
The index of producer prices shows (in the national currency of the country concerned) changes in the ex-works sale prices of all products sold on the domestic markets of the various countries, excluding imports. Euro area and EU indices refer to overall weighted price changes. The figures are not adjusted. Missing observations from Member States for the calculation of the euro area and the EU are estimated. The euro area (EA13) consisted of 13 Member States up to 31 December 2007: Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia and Finland. From 1 January 2008 the euro area (EA15) also includes Cyprus and Malta.The EU27 includes Belgium (BE), Bulgaria (BG), the Czech Republic (CZ), Denmark (DK), Germany (DE), Estonia (EE), Ireland (IE), Greece (EL), Spain (ES), France (FR), Italy (IT), Cyprus (CY), Latvia (LV), Lithuania (LT), Luxembourg (LU), Hungary (HU), Malta (MT), the Netherlands (NL), Austria (AT), Poland (PL), Portugal (PT), Romania (RO), Slovenia (SI), Slovakia (SK), Finland (FI), Sweden (SE) and the United Kingdom (UK).
As part of Eurostat's guidelines for the dissemination of data when the EU or euro area is enlarged, the aggregate data series commented on in this News Release refer to the official composition of the euro area in the most recent month for which data is available. Thus News Releases with data for months up to December 2007 commented on EA13 series, while Releases with data for January 2008 onwards comment on EA15 series.
Data of previous months have been revised compared to those issued in News Release 16/2008 of 4 February 2008. The monthly and annual growth rates for December 2007 for total industry excluding construction remain the same for the euro area. For the EU27, the monthly growth rate previously published was +0.2% and the annual growth rate was +4.5%.
