INTERVENTIONS IN THE AGRICULTURE SECTOR IN ITALY

The Commission has decided not to raise any objections to the above law as regards rules of competition laid down in the EEC Treaty. This law concerns various aid measures to finance : - the repairing of damage caused by natural disasters (in particular by drought); - structural improvements to cooperatives processing and marketing agricultural products; - the promotion and marketing of agricultural products. It should be stressed that : - as regards damage caused by drought and other natural disasters, aid is given in the form of the taking over of some of the debts incurred by cooperatives, subsidies and assistance with the payment of extra energy costs; - as regards the financing of mergers, the Commission has asked the Italian authorities to give details of specific cases for which costs other than those of the administrative procedure adapted for mergers are covered by the aid, or the general rules that apply in such cases; - as regards aid for the acquisition of equipment or structures for regional bodies, the Commission has asked the Italian authorities to give details either of specific cases where the acquisition costs exceed the market prices, or of general rules that apply in such cases. * * *
